1.  Headspace
Headspace is one of the most well-known, and probably one of the most used meditation and mindfulness apps on the mobile marketplace.

There are hundreds of guided meditations and more than 40 mindfulness exercises in their library.

The co-founder, Andy Puddicombe, used to be a monk, and it’s his voice you hear in most of the guided tracks.

He has one of the most relaxing and trusting voices you’ll ever hear. Which, obviously lends itself perfectly to talking you through guided meditation sessions.

Get it in the app store and use it for free for two weeks. After that, it’s around $7.99 to $12.99, depending on the features you want to unlock.

2. Insight Timer
Insight timer works on a different model to Headspace and a lot of other meditation apps. It’s a curated platform, where spiritual teachers, artists, and musicians can sign up and share their work.

The teachers then earn a % from the user’s membership fees based on how popular their work is.

The benefit to the user is a massive volume of work to choose from. There are calming music tracks, guided meditations, insightful talks, courses, and more.

You can access some guided tracks and courses for free, as well as a 7-day trial with everything unlocked. After seven days, it costs $9.99 per month.

3. Mindworks
Mindworks was created by five long-time meditators whose lives have been enriched and transformed by practice. Having benefited from training under some of the world’s most accomplished Buddhist meditation masters, our wish is to pay it forward by sharing the many joys of practice with others.

Their international team of instructors is comprised of highly accomplished meditators, scholars, psychologists and professionals.

Best of all, they’re an educational non-profit 501c3. Your contribution goes directly into content production, technology, Mind Trainer support and getting the word out.

4. Calm
Calm has an extensive database of guided meditations, ambient tracks, mindfulness techniques, and more relaxation techniques and features.

They even have sleep stories read by celebrities such as Stephen Fry and Matthew McConaughey – who doesn’t want to fall asleep while Matthew McConaughey reads you a story?

What makes Calm different from a lot of the other relaxation apps is the number of personal touches it has.

It has a mood check-in feature, you can customize the home screen, flag all your favorite tracks, tell the app what your relaxation goals are, and more.

You can take a 7-day free trial, and then it costs $12.99 per month.

5. Portal
Portal is a 3D soundscape and ambiance app. Instead of guided meditations, Portal takes you to some of the world’s most relaxing locations.

You can shut your eyes and find yourself surrounded by the nature sounds of the Amazonian rainforest or the Swiss Alps.

Certain sounds, such as rainfall or waves crashing on the shore, resonate with people on a deep, subconscious level. You might find the perfect sound to reduce stress while virtually traveling the globe.

6. Aura
Awarded the Best of 2017 in the Apple store, Aura has been helping millions of people “manage their emotions and get restful sleep” for years.

Every time you log into the app, it asks you how you’re feeling. The app then offers you meditations and calming exercises based on your mood.

You can also track your moods and look back over to see how much of an impact using the app has had.

7. Breathe2Relax
Marketed as a “portable stress management tool,” Breathe2Relax helps users focus on the core exercise behind reaching a deep state of relaxation – breathing.

It’s perfect for beginners, just starting to explore meditation and relaxation techniques. Being able to control your breathing is the key to getting the most out of other relaxation.

It’s free to download and has enough breathing cycles and features to take you from a beginner to a professional at controlling your breathing.

8. Simple Habit

Another relaxation app that’s perfect for beginners is Simple Habit. It has loads of 5-minute meditations and exercises to help you catch a moment during a busy day. As well as longer guided meditations, motivational guides, and bedtime stories.

It’s free to download, and you can access a sample of their library. Then it’s $11.99 per month to unlock their vast library of relaxation content.

9. Smiling Mind

Smiling Mind is one of the few comprehensive relaxation apps that are entirely free. The company behind the app is a not-for-profit, and its mission is to reach as many people as possible.

They have a lot of relaxation techniques designed specifically for children. So, it’s an app for all the family, which is fun.

For a free app, it has a massive range of features. It’s well worth checking out, if not just to see what it has to offer.

10. 10% Happier

10% Happier is one of the more interesting relaxation apps. Or, at least the story behind it and their quirky approach to relaxation is.

ABC news anchor Dan Harris created the app. After having an on-air panic attack in 2004, Dan found meditation and fell in love.

So much so that he created 10% Happier. There are a handful of experienced teachers behind the content in the app. You’ll find guided meditations, mindfulness exercises, and other relaxation content, 

If you’re interested, you can access some of their basic videos for free and get a feel for their quirky style. It then costs $14.99 per month to unlock all their videos and features.
